American esports player Jake "Stewie2K" Yip discussed the atmosphere in the G2 team during his personal Twitch stream, where he successfully competed under their banner in the recent Dallas championship. Jake referred to G2 as a "fake team" due to the strictly professional relationships between the players.
"When I arrived for the first day of practice, not many people were talking, and there was a palpable tension. It wasn't very fun. When people were discussing things, it had a military vibe. There's a general who runs through the agenda, gives examples, and so on. Everyone listens attentively.
It was a one-man show; no one really enjoys being there, it's like a 9-to-5 job. People come and go. I know that atmosphere... that's not a real team. There will be moments when people don't voice their opinions because they can't and don't feel they have the right to.
The first day I felt this, I tried to crack a few jokes. The crowd was very heavy. I noticed that m0NESY tried to lift the mood along with me. <...>
It seemed like some things built up over time. There was a lot of tension, and it felt like people weren't listening to each other, but it was hushed up and not discussed. This is really an unhealthy atmosphere for a team. You could see it bothered them. During the tournament, I got to see the positive sides of everyone."
To recap, Stewie2K played as a stand-in for G2 at IEM Dallas 2024 in the USA, where the team ultimately took first place and earned $100,000 (as well as a spot at IEM Cologne 2024). In the tournament final, G2 defeated Vitality with a score of 2-1.
